On one hand, it is undeniable that technology has the potential to create new opportunities for people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. For instance, the rise of the internet and digital platforms have provided access to information and resources that were once only available to those with privileged access. This democratization of knowledge has allowed individuals from underprivileged communities to gain skills and expertise, which in turn has opened doors for them in various industries. Moreover, the gig economy, facilitated by technology, offers flexible work opportunities that have empowered many people to earn an income while maintaining their personal lives.

On the other hand, there are arguments that suggest that technology disproportionately benefits those who already hold significant economic power and social status. The digital divide is a prime example of this phenomenon, as access to advanced technologies remains limited for individuals in rural or low-income areas. As a result, these groups are left behind in the rapidly changing digital landscape, which further widens the gap between the haves and have-nots. In addition, the automation of many industries may lead to job displacement, particularly for low-skilled workers. Consequently, this can contribute to increased unemployment and social unrest among marginalized communities.

In conclusion, while technology has undoubtedly created new avenues for social mobility and economic empowerment, it is essential to acknowledge that its benefits are not universally distributed. The digital divide and the potential impact of automation on low-skilled workers demonstrate that the role of technology in shaping social mobility is complex and multifaceted. Therefore, it can be argued that technology has both increased and decreased social mobility, with the net effect depending on how it is harnessed and distributed.
