Task: Write an essay on the following topic:"Some people believe that it is better for students to have a year-round school calendar rather than traditional academic years with long vacations." Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Model Answer:
In recent times, there has been an ongoing debate regarding whether students should follow a year-round school calendar or adhere to the traditional academic years with long holidays. While the former offers continuous learning and skill development, the latter provides students with ample time for relaxation and personal growth. This essay will discuss both perspectives and present my own opinion on this issue.
Those in favor of a year-round school calendar argue that it allows for a more consistent learning environment. This method ensures that students are consistently engaged in their studies, which may lead to better retention and understanding of the material. Moreover, this approach helps prevent the so-called 'summer slide', a phenomenon where students lose some of the knowledge and skills they gained during the previous academic year. In addition, a continuous school calendar can facilitate faster progression through the education system, as students do not have to wait for an entire year to move up a grade.
On the other hand, proponents of the traditional academic years with long vacations highlight the importance of relaxation and personal development for students. Extended holidays provide opportunities for students to pursue their interests outside of school, such as sports, arts, or volunteering. This time also allows them to spend quality time with family and friends, which can contribute to their overall well-being. Furthermore, long vacations can help alleviate stress and prevent burnout among students who may be under immense academic pressure.
In my opinion, a balanced approach that combines the benefits of both systems would be ideal. While continuous learning is essential for maintaining knowledge and skills, it is equally important to allow students adequate time to rest and recharge. Consequently, an alternating system could be implemented whereby schools follow a year-round calendar but incorporate shorter breaks throughout the year, along with longer vacation periods during which students can participate in extracurricular activities or internships.
In conclusion, the decision between a year-round school calendar and traditional academic years with long vacations is not straightforward. Both systems have their merits and drawbacks. Ultimately, it would be beneficial to find a middle ground that offers continuous learning opportunities while still providing students with adequate rest and time for personal growth.
