The primary reasons for this shift are the rise of social media, materialism, and the decline of traditional values.

Firstly, the advent of social media has led to a decrease in empathy. People now have a platform to express their thoughts and opinions openly, often without considering the consequences or how their words might affect others. This lack of filter can lead to hurt feelings, cyberbullying, and the spread of fake news, which ultimately erodes empathy among individuals.

Secondly, materialism has contributed to a decline in empathy within society. The pursuit of wealth and possessions has become a central focus for many people, leading them to prioritize their own needs over those of others. This selfishness can result in disregard for the suffering of others, as long as it does not directly impact the individual's own life.

Lastly, the decline of traditional values has had a significant effect on empathy levels. In many societies, respect and care for one another are no longer considered essential values. As a result, people may become less inclined to feel compassion or concern for others who are struggling.

In conclusion, while there may be instances where individuals or communities show increased empathy, overall, it is evident that society as a whole is becoming less empathetic.
