IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: The importance of social cohesion in a multicultural society.
Question: Some people argue that social cohesion is essential for the successful integration of diverse cultures, while others believe that individuals should maintain their own cultural identity regardless of the majority culture. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Model Answer:
In today's globalized world, multicultural societies are becoming increasingly commonplace. This phenomenon brings about numerous challenges as well as benefits. The significance of social cohesion in a multicultural society is a subject that has sparked much debate among experts and laypeople alike. In this essay, I will examine the perspectives of those who advocate for social cohesion and those who emphasize the importance of preserving one's own cultural identity. After weighing the arguments presented by both sides, I will conclude with my own opinion on the matter.
On one hand, proponents of social cohesion argue that it is crucial for a multicultural society to foster a sense of unity and belonging among its diverse population. They believe that by encouraging individuals from different cultural backgrounds to interact and collaborate, a strong social fabric can be built. This, in turn, promotes tolerance and understanding, which are essential for the peaceful coexistence of various cultures within the same society. Furthermore, they contend that a cohesive society is better equipped to address common challenges such as economic development, education, and healthcare.
On the other hand, some individuals argue that it is more important for people to maintain their own cultural identity regardless of the majority culture. They believe that by preserving one's unique customs, traditions, and values, a society can ensure its rich cultural heritage is not lost in the process of integration. In this viewpoint, individuals are encouraged to embrace their roots while simultaneously respecting and appreciating other cultures. This approach allows for a more harmonious coexistence, as it acknowledges and celebrates differences rather than seeking uniformity.
In my opinion, both social cohesion and cultural identity preservation are vital aspects of a multicultural society. While social cohesion is necessary to create a sense of unity among diverse groups, it should not come at the expense of one's unique cultural heritage. Instead, efforts should be made to strike a balance between promoting integration and respecting individuality. By fostering mutual understanding and respect among different cultures, societies can benefit from the wealth of knowledge, skills, and perspectives that each group brings to the table. In conclusion, it is essential for multicultural societies to prioritize both social cohesion and cultural identity preservation in order to create a harmonious, inclusive, and prosperous community.
