IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: Should governments provide incentives for sustainable transportation?

Model Answer:
In recent years, the increasing concern about environmental issues has led to a growing interest in sustainable transportation. The question arises whether governments should provide incentives to encourage the use of environmentally friendly modes of transport such as cycling, walking, and public transport. In this essay, I will discuss both sides of the argument and provide my own opinion on the matter.

On one hand, there are several reasons why governments should consider providing incentives for sustainable transportation. Firstly, it can help reduce traffic congestion in urban areas. As the population continues to grow, cities become more crowded, leading to longer commuting times and increased air pollution. Encouraging people to use public transport, cycle or walk can alleviate this problem, making cities less crowded and more livable.

Secondly, providing incentives for sustainable transportation can contribute to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), transportation is responsible for around 15% of global carbon dioxide emissions. By promoting environmentally friendly modes of transport, governments can play a significant role in mitigating climate change and protecting the environment.

Moreover, incentives can also help boost the economy by creating jobs in the sustainable transportation sector. For example, investing in public transport infrastructure such as buses, trains, and trams can lead to job creation in manufacturing, maintenance, and operation. This, in turn, can stimulate economic growth and reduce unemployment rates.

On the other hand, some argue that governments should not provide incentives for sustainable transportation. They believe that individuals should be responsible for their own choices and actions regarding transport modes. Critics argue that offering incentives could lead to an overreliance on government support, discouraging innovation in the private sector. Furthermore, there are concerns about the cost-effectiveness of such initiatives. Governments may face financial constraints, and resources allocated to sustainable transportation incentives could be better spent elsewhere.

In conclusion, while there are valid arguments against providing incentives for sustainable transportation, I believe that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. The reduction in traffic congestion, greenhouse gas emissions, and job creation make a strong case for government intervention. However, it is essential to ensure that these incentives are targeted effectively and do not become a burden on the taxpayer. Ultimately, governments must strike a balance between promoting sustainability and maintaining financial responsibility.
