Task 2 Writing: Some people believe that governments should subsidize electric vehicles (EVs) to encourage their use, while others argue that this is not necessary. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Model Answer:
The increasing environmental concerns and the need for sustainable energy sources have led to a growing interest in electric vehicles (EVs). Some proponents of EVs argue that governments should subsidize them to promote their use, while others believe that this is not necessary. In this essay, I will discuss both these viewpoints and provide my own opinion on whether or not the government should offer such incentives.
Firstly, those in favor of government subsidies for EVs argue that they are essential to encourage people to switch from traditional petrol and diesel-powered vehicles to electric ones. The primary reason behind this is environmental concerns. Traditional vehicles contribute significantly to air pollution, which has a detrimental effect on human health and the environment. As a result, advocates of EV subsidies argue that by reducing the cost of these vehicles through government support, more people will be motivated to make the switch, thereby creating a cleaner and healthier environment for everyone.
On the other hand, opponents of government subsidies argue that this is not necessary because the market will eventually drive down the costs of EVs as they become more popular. They contend that if the demand for electric vehicles increases naturally due to their numerous benefits such as lower maintenance costs and reduced dependence on fossil fuels, the prices will decrease over time. As a result, they believe that government intervention in the form of subsidies is unnecessary.
While I understand the concerns of both sides, I lean towards supporting government subsidies for electric vehicles. Although the market may eventually lead to a reduction in the cost of EVs, it may take too long without direct intervention from the government. The environmental benefits and potential savings for consumers make this an investment worth making on behalf of future generations. However, it is crucial that the subsidies are implemented responsibly and effectively to avoid any misuse or corruption.
In conclusion, while I recognize that there are valid arguments against government subsidies for electric vehicles, I believe that the benefits they offer in terms of environmental protection and sustainable energy consumption outweigh the potential drawbacks. Governments should carefully consider implementing subsidy programs to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles, but it is essential to monitor their effectiveness and ensure they do not lead to any unintended consequences.
