While it is true that individuals possess free will and can make independent choices, social norms often exert a significant impact on their decisions.

Social norms are unwritten rules that govern acceptable behavior within a specific culture or group. They stem from a collective understanding of what is deemed appropriate, right, or wrong. For instance, in most societies, it is expected for people to greet each other with a handshake or a nod. Deviating from this norm may lead to awkwardness or even misunderstanding among peers.

Moreover, social norms are often enforced by peer pressure and the fear of social isolation. Conforming to these norms helps individuals establish a sense of belonging within their community and avoid rejection. For example, in many Western countries, smoking was once considered acceptable behavior. However, as public opinion shifted against smoking due to health concerns, those who continued to smoke faced social disapproval.
