IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic:"Should governments provide incentives for sustainable transportation?"
Model Answer:
In recent years, the increasing concern about environmental issues has led many people to advocate for sustainable transportation. The question arises whether governments should play a role in promoting and providing incentives for this type of transport. In this essay, I will discuss both sides of the argument and provide my own perspective on this matter.
On one hand, there are several reasons why governments should consider offering incentives for sustainable transportation. Firstly, it is crucial to address the environmental impact caused by traditional modes of transportation such as cars, buses, and airplanes. Emissions from these vehicles contribute significantly to air pollution and climate change. By promoting alternatives like cycling, walking, or using public transport, governments can help reduce the harmful effects on our environment.
Secondly, encouraging sustainable transportation methods could lead to a reduction in traffic congestion and road accidents. When more people use public transport, there will be fewer vehicles on the road, which would alleviate traffic problems in urban areas. Moreover, cycling and walking can reduce the likelihood of accidents caused by human error or mechanical failure in motor vehicles.
On the other hand, some argue that it is not necessary for governments to provide incentives because market forces should dictate the choice of transportation methods. They believe that if consumers find sustainable options more appealing, they will naturally choose them without any additional encouragement from the government. Additionally, there are concerns about the cost-effectiveness of such initiatives since the funds used to create these incentives could potentially be allocated to other areas where they might have a greater impact.
Despite these arguments, I believe that governments should indeed provide incentives for sustainable transportation. The benefits outweigh any potential drawbacks, and it is essential to act now in order to mitigate the damage caused by unsustainable practices. Governments can implement various measures such as tax breaks, subsidies, or infrastructure development to support and promote eco-friendly modes of transport.
In conclusion, while some may argue against government intervention in this area, it is clear that the long-term benefits of promoting sustainable transportation far outweigh any potential costs. By offering incentives, governments can help reduce environmental degradation, alleviate traffic congestion, and improve overall public health – all crucial factors for a sustainable future.
