Topic: The importance of protecting endangered species from extinction
Writing Task 2:
Some people argue that it is important to protect endangered species by investing significant amounts of money and resources into conservation efforts, while others believe that this money could be better spent elsewhere. Discuss both these viewpoints and give your own opinion on the matter.
Model Answer:
In recent years, the topic of protecting endangered species from extinction has become a subject of increasing concern worldwide. This has led to ongoing debates over whether or not significant amounts of money and resources should be invested into conservation efforts. Some argue that such investment is essential for preserving biodiversity and maintaining ecological balance, while others contend that this funding could be better allocated to address more pressing issues. In this essay, I will explore the viewpoints of both sides and ultimately provide my own perspective on the matter.
On one hand, it is argued that protecting endangered species is crucial for a number of reasons. Firstly, these species play a vital role in maintaining ecosystems and preserving biodiversity. For instance, the extinction of a single species can have unforeseen consequences on the environment as entire food chains may be disrupted. Secondly, the loss of a species may also result in a decline in genetic diversity, which could negatively impact the long-term survival of other organisms within the same ecosystem. Lastly, endangered species often serve as tourist attractions, generating revenue for local communities and contributing to sustainable development.
On the contrary, it is suggested that investing large amounts of money into conservation efforts may not be the most effective use of resources. Critics argue that funding could be better allocated towards alleviating poverty, improving healthcare systems, or addressing climate change, which have more immediate and significant impacts on human life. Furthermore, some argue that focusing solely on protecting endangered species may inadvertently lead to the neglect of other pressing environmental issues, such as deforestation and pollution.
In conclusion, while it is essential to recognize the importance of preserving biodiversity and maintaining ecological balance, it is equally important to consider alternative ways of allocating resources that can have a more immediate and tangible impact on human lives. Ultimately, a balanced approach that takes into account both the protection of endangered species and the needs of the global community must be implemented in order to ensure long-term sustainability.
