The question for this IELTS Writing Task 2 topic is as follows: "Some people believe that society is becoming less empathetic due to the rise of technology and social media. Others argue that it is becoming more empathetic due to increased awareness of global issues. Discuss both these viewpoints and give your own opinion."
Here's a model answer for this writing topic, structured according to IELTS scoring standards:
In recent years, there has been an ongoing debate regarding the level of empathy in society. Some argue that it is decreasing due to technological advancements and the impact of social media, while others contend that it is increasing as a result of greater awareness of global issues. In this essay, both these perspectives will be examined and evaluated, ultimately leading to my own opinion on the matter.
Firstly, those who believe empathy in society is waning point to the rise of technology and social media as significant factors. The increasing use of digital platforms has created a "virtual" world where people often communicate through text messages, social media posts, and online forums. This reduction in face-to-face interaction may lead individuals to be less understanding of others' emotions, thereby reducing empathy levels. Furthermore, the anonymity provided by the internet can encourage negative behaviors, such as cyberbullying, which can also contribute to a decline in empathy.
On the other hand, proponents of increased societal empathy argue that advancements in technology and the spread of information through social media have actually heightened awareness of global issues. For example, the rapid dissemination of news and stories about human rights abuses or natural disasters can elicit strong emotional responses from people around the world. As a result, individuals may become more compassionate and empathetic toward those suffering in other parts of the globe. Additionally, online campaigns and movements promoting social justice and equality can foster a sense of collective responsibility and understanding among diverse groups.
After examining both perspectives, it is my opinion that while technology and social media have the potential to decrease empathy in some respects, they are ultimately leading to an increase in societal empathy. This conclusion is based on the fact that greater awareness of global issues, as well as increased accessibility to information, can create a more compassionate and interconnected world.
In terms of IELTS scoring standards, this answer would likely receive a band score of
8 or
9 due to its clear structure, effective analysis of both viewpoints, and the coherence of the overall argument.
