IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: Should governments prioritize environmental sustainability over economic growth?
Model Answer:
In recent years, the world has witnessed a growing awareness of environmental issues and their impact on human lives. This has led to debates surrounding whether governments should prioritize environmental sustainability or continue to focus on economic growth. In this essay, I will discuss the arguments for both perspectives and provide my own viewpoint on this matter.
On one hand, some argue that economic growth is essential for a nation's development and well-being. A strong economy can provide better living conditions, healthcare, education, and employment opportunities for its citizens. For example, in developing countries, rapid economic growth has lifted millions out of poverty and improved overall quality of life. Additionally, a robust economy can invest more resources into environmental initiatives, ensuring that sustainable practices are not compromised.
On the other hand, advocates for prioritizing environmental sustainability emphasize the long-term consequences of unsustainable practices. The earth's finite resources cannot support endless economic growth without depleting natural reserves and causing irreversible damage to ecosystems. Climate change, deforestation, and pollution are just a few examples of problems exacerbated by economic expansion at the expense of environmental health. In this view, governments should adopt sustainable policies that ensure long-term ecological balance while still promoting economic growth, although it may be slower in comparison.
In my opinion, governments must strike a balance between economic growth and environmental sustainability to achieve a harmonious coexistence with nature. By adopting eco-friendly technologies and policies, nations can foster sustainable development that meets the needs of current generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This requires collaboration among governments, businesses, and citizens to create innovative solutions that prioritize long-term goals over short-term gains.
In conclusion, it is clear that both environmental sustainability and economic growth are crucial for a nation's development. Governments should not choose one over the other but instead focus on integrating these two aspects into their policies and decision-making processes to ensure a sustainable future for all.
