Critics of prioritizing environmental sustainability argue that focusing on economic growth is essential for developing nations to raise their citizens' standards of living. For instance, China has experienced rapid economic growth in recent decades, lifting millions out of poverty and providing access to basic amenities such as healthcare and education.
