IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: The importance of conserving water resources.
Question: Some people believe that it is more important to develop new sources of water supply rather than focusing on the conservation of existing water resources. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this viewpoint, and explain your position using relevant examples.
Model Answer:
In recent years, the issue of water scarcity has become increasingly critical, as the demand for freshwater continues to rise due to factors such as population growth and industrialization. Some argue that the focus should be on developing new sources of water supply, rather than conserving existing resources. This essay will present both sides of this argument and conclude with a position supported by relevant examples.
On one hand, it is true that developing new sources of water supply, such as desalination plants or artificial rainfall generation, can be an effective solution to water scarcity. Desalination plants convert saltwater into freshwater, which can be utilized for agricultural and domestic purposes. Artificial rainfall generation, on the other hand, involves cloud seeding techniques to stimulate precipitation in regions that experience low rainfall. While these technologies may seem like a viable option, they also come with environmental consequences and financial implications.
For instance, desalination plants require significant amounts of energy, which often comes from non-renewable sources like fossil fuels. This increases greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate change. Additionally, the process of desalination can be harmful to marine life due to the discharge of brine back into the ocean. Artificial rainfall generation, although seemingly environmentally friendly, is not a sustainable long-term solution as it relies on unpredictable weather patterns and requires substantial financial investment in technology and infrastructure.
Conversely, conserving existing water resources through measures such as water recycling, leakage reduction, and public awareness campaigns can be an effective and environmentally responsible approach to combating water scarcity. Water recycling involves the treatment of wastewater for non-potable uses like irrigation, reducing the demand on freshwater sources. Leakage reduction, by repairing damaged pipes and infrastructure, ensures that water losses are minimized. Lastly, public awareness campaigns can promote responsible water consumption habits among consumers.
In conclusion, while developing new sources of water supply may provide short-term relief from water scarcity issues, it is crucial to prioritize the conservation of existing water resources. Conservation measures are not only environmentally sustainable but also financially more viable in the long run. Therefore, it is essential for governments, businesses, and individuals to work together in implementing water conservation strategies and raising awareness about the importance of this critical resource.
