Task 2 Topic: "Is society becoming more or less responsive to public opinion?"
Model Answer:
In recent years, there has been a growing debate about whether society is becoming more or less responsive to public opinion. Some people argue that the advancements in technology and increased accessibility to information have made it easier for the public to voice their opinions, which in turn has led to an increase in societal responsiveness. On the other hand, others contend that the influence of powerful corporations, political parties, and elites has led to a decrease in responsiveness to public opinion. In this essay, I will analyze both perspectives and provide evidence to support my argument.
Firstly, it is important to consider the role of technology in shaping public opinion and its impact on societal responsiveness. The rise of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram has given people a powerful tool to share their views and connect with like-minded individuals. This increased visibility of public opinion can be seen in the widespread protests and activism movements that have emerged in response to various social issues. For example, the Black Lives Matter movement gained significant momentum through social media, which eventually led to changes in policy and legislation regarding racial equality. These examples suggest that society is becoming more responsive to public opinion due to the influence of technology.
However, it is also important to acknowledge the role of powerful entities in shaping societal responsiveness. Corporations and political parties have increasingly become more influential in recent years, and their financial power can often override the voice of the public. For instance, lobbying groups representing powerful industries have been successful in influencing government policies that are not always in the best interest of the general public. This suggests that despite the advancements in technology and increased access to information, society may still be less responsive to public opinion due to the influence of these powerful entities.
In conclusion, while it is true that technology has played a significant role in increasing societal responsiveness to public opinion through platforms like social media, it is also essential to recognize the counteracting force exerted by powerful corporations and political parties. As a result, it can be argued that society remains both more and less responsive to public opinion due to these competing factors.
Overall, the quality of this response aligns with IELTS
Band Score 7 as it presents a well-structured, coherent argument with appropriate evidence and counterarguments.
