Writing Task 2 Topic: The importance of reducing reliance on fossil fuels for energy.
Question: Some people believe that reducing the use of fossil fuels is crucial in order to protect the environment, while others argue that they are still necessary due to their accessibility and affordability. Discuss both sides of the argument and give your own opinion.
Model Answer:
The increasing reliance on fossil fuels has become a significant concern for many people around the world. While some argue that reducing our use of these resources is crucial in order to protect the environment, others believe they are still necessary due to their accessibility and affordability. This essay will discuss both sides of the argument and give my own opinion on whether or not we should reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.
On one hand, it is argued that reducing the use of fossil fuels is essential for protecting the environment. The combustion of these non-renewable resources releases harmful greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, into the atmosphere. These emissions are major contributors to global warming and climate change, leading to extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and loss of biodiversity. In addition, the extraction and transportation of fossil fuels can result in oil spills, air and water pollution, and habitat destruction.
On the other hand, some people believe that fossil fuels are still necessary due to their accessibility and affordability. They argue that renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar, and hydroelectric power, have not yet reached the same level of efficiency and reliability as traditional energy sources derived from fossil fuels. Additionally, these alternative energy sources can be more expensive to install and maintain, making them less attractive to individuals, businesses, and governments with limited budgets.
While it is true that renewable energy sources have their limitations and costs, I believe that the long-term benefits of reducing our reliance on fossil fuels outweigh the short-term drawbacks. The transition to a more sustainable energy system would not only protect the environment but also create new jobs in the renewable energy sector, stimulate economic growth, and reduce our dependency on foreign energy sources. Furthermore, technological advancements are continuously improving the efficiency and affordability of renewable energy options, making them an increasingly viable alternative to fossil fuels.
In conclusion, although reducing reliance on fossil fuels may initially seem challenging due to concerns over accessibility and affordability, the long-term benefits for the environment, economy, and society as a whole are too significant to ignore. By investing in research and development of renewable energy technologies, we can create a more sustainable future that is less dependent on non-renewable resources.
