On one hand, social media has facilitated increased participation in public affairs by making information more accessible and allowing citizens to voice their opinions easily. Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have provided avenues for people to connect with others who share their views or concerns, thereby fostering a sense of community. Additionally, these platforms have enabled citizens to stay informed about current events, public policies, and political figures, which in turn promotes active engagement in the democratic process. For example, social media campaigns like #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo have raised awareness on important social issues and mobilized people to take action. Furthermore, online petitions and fundraising initiatives, such as those organized through GoFundMe and Change.org, have empowered individuals and communities to directly influence change at the local, national, and global levels.

On the other hand, there are also potential drawbacks to social media's role in civic engagement. The anonymity provided by these platforms can lead to the spread of misinformation and the amplification of extreme views. This phenomenon has been particularly evident during election campaigns, where fake news and propaganda have been disseminated, often leading to divisive outcomes. Moreover, the echo chambers created on social media can contribute to polarization, as individuals are more likely to engage with content that aligns with their existing beliefs.
