Task 2 Topic: "Is society becoming more or less tolerant of dissenting opinions?"

Model Answer:
Over recent years, there has been much debate surrounding the level of tolerance displayed by contemporary societies towards dissenting opinions. This essay will argue that, although significant progress has been made in fostering an environment conducive to free thought and expression, modern society remains largely intolerant of divergent viewpoints.

In support of this argument, it can be asserted that the rise of social media has provided a platform for individuals to express their opinions openly, regardless of their content. This democratisation of information exchange has allowed dissenting voices to reach a wider audience and spark meaningful dialogue. However, alongside these positive developments, there is also evidence of increased polarisation and division within societies.

For instance, the rise in "cancel culture" has seen numerous public figures being ostracised or silenced for holding controversial views. This phenomenon reflects an inherent intolerance towards dissenting opinions and demonstrates that society's level of tolerance may not have progressed as much as it initially seemed.

Furthermore, the growing power of echo chambers and filter bubbles has reinforced the divide between different groups with opposing viewpoints. As a result, individuals are increasingly exposed only to perspectives that align with their own beliefs, limiting the chances for meaningful engagement with dissenting opinions.

In conclusion, while there have been some advancements in promoting an open environment for the expression of diverse ideas, contemporary societies continue to exhibit a significant level of intolerance towards dissenting opinions. This can be evidenced by the prevalence of cancel culture and the growing influence of echo chambers and filter bubbles. Therefore, it is essential that society strives to foster an environment in which all viewpoints are given equal weight and respect.
