On one hand, proponents of ability-based grouping argue that this approach allows teachers to tailor their instruction to meet the unique needs of each student. By placing students in groups with similar abilities, educators can focus on strengthening weaker areas and further expanding on strong points. This ensures a higher level of academic success for all students, as they are receiving instruction that is catered specifically to their needs (Parish & Ladd, 1991). Moreover, it has been suggested that this method promotes peer learning, as students within the same ability group can share ideas and collaborate more effectively (Cohen & Lotan, 2010).

On the other hand, critics of ability-based grouping argue that such a system can create a sense of stigma among students who are placed in lower-ability groups.
