This essay will examine both perspectives in order to reach a balanced conclusion on the role of religion in shaping cultural values.

On one hand, proponents of the view that religion significantly influences cultural values point to the long-standing traditions and customs that have been derived from religious teachings. For instance, many societies have adopted the Ten Commandments as fundamental principles for their moral codes. Similarly, Hinduism's concept of dharma has shaped Indian society's understanding of duty and obligation. In such cases, it is evident that religion has played a pivotal role in establishing normative values within specific cultures.

Moreover, religious institutions often serve as the backbone of communities by providing social cohesion, moral guidance, and support during times of crisis. Through these functions, religions have helped to form and reinforce cultural values related to family life, community involvement, and ethical behavior. For example, the Catholic Church has long been a powerful force in Latin American societies, shaping values around marriage, education, and social welfare.
