In the short term, trauma can disrupt a child's ability to learn and process information effectively. The stress response triggered by traumatic events or ongoing toxic stress can impair memory and concentration, making it difficult for students to focus on academics (Bandalos & Wagner, 2013). Additionally, the emotional turmoil that accompanies trauma may result in absenteeism or a decline in academic performance.

Over the long term, ACEs can contribute to several adverse outcomes in education. For instance, students who have experienced trauma may be more likely to repeat grades or drop out of school entirely (Felner et al., 2010). This is due to factors such as difficulty managing emotions, behavioral problems, and a lack of motivation. Furthermore, the effects of trauma can extend beyond the classroom, with students experiencing negative consequences in their personal lives, such as poor mental health, substance abuse, or risky sexual behavior (Felitti et al., 1998).
