Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on Earth, which includes the genetic diversity within species, the species diversity in ecosystems, and the diversity of ecosystems themselves. The extinction of a single species can have far-reaching effects on the ecosystem, disrupting the balance and potentially causing the collapse of the entire system. For instance, the loss of a pollinator species could lead to the extinction of other plant species that rely on them for reproduction, ultimately affecting all the organisms within the food chain.

Secondly, natural habitats play an essential role in regulating global climate and weather patterns. Forests, in particular, are known as "the Earth's lungs" because they produce oxygen through photosynthesis while absorbing carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas responsible for global warming.
