IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: The importance of social cohesion in times of crisis
Question: Some people argue that social cohesion is essential for a society to overcome crises effectively. Others believe that individual actions and personal responsibility are more important. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Model Answer:
Social cohesion plays a vital role in the overall development of a nation, especially during times of crisis. It is often argued that societies with strong social cohesion can overcome challenges more effectively than those without it. However, some individuals believe that personal responsibility and individual actions are more important. In this essay, I will examine both perspectives and express my own opinion on the matter.
On one hand, proponents of social cohesion argue that a united society is better equipped to face and overcome crises. This unity can lead to collective problem-solving, as people from different walks of life come together to contribute their ideas, skills, and resources. Moreover, strong social ties help create an environment where trust, empathy, and understanding are prevalent, making it easier for a society to adapt to change and find common ground in difficult times. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, communities with a high degree of social cohesion were more likely to have effective local responses, with neighbours helping each other and volunteering their time and resources.
On the other hand, those who advocate for individual responsibility argue that it is the personal actions and choices of individuals that ultimately determine the success or failure of a society in overcoming crises. They believe that every person should take responsibility for their own well-being, as well as contribute to the common good. This view emphasizes self-reliance, initiative, and the importance of individual effort. For instance, entrepreneurs who create new businesses and innovate during times of crisis can have a significant impact on the economy and help drive recovery.
While both perspectives have merit, I believe that social cohesion is the key to overcoming crises effectively. While it is true that individuals should be responsible for their actions and contribute to society, strong social connections allow for a more efficient and collaborative response to challenges. When people from different backgrounds and walks of life come together in times of crisis, they can pool their resources, skills, and knowledge to create innovative solutions and support each other emotionally. In essence, social cohesion fosters an environment where individuals are motivated to act collectively, while still maintaining their individual responsibilities.
In conclusion, both social cohesion and personal responsibility play significant roles in overcoming crises; however, I believe that the importance of social cohesion cannot be understated. It is through unity and collaboration that societies can find strength and resilience in times of crisis, paving the way for a more stable and prosperous future.
