One major factor contributing to the decline in trust in institutions is corruption. Instances of corruption within various institutions, such as politics, business, and law enforcement, have become increasingly prevalent. For example, several high-profile scandals involving politicians accepting bribes or engaging in unethical behavior have led to a loss of faith in governmental institutions. Similarly, corporate scandals like the Enron and Wells Fargo cases have damaged public trust in private sector organizations. These incidents show that institutions are not always acting in the best interests of society, leading to a decrease in societal trust.

Another factor contributing to the decline in trust is the lack of transparency within many institutions. In some cases, institutions may not provide sufficient information about their actions or decisions, making it difficult for citizens to hold them accountable. For instance, the actions of intelligence agencies and military organizations are often shrouded in secrecy, leading to suspicions that they are not operating ethically or in the best interests of society.
