However, due to climate change and human activities such as overfishing and pollution, coral reefs are experiencing a phenomenon known as "bleaching," where the corals lose their symbiotic algae, causing them to weaken and eventually die.

The loss of coral reefs has far-reaching consequences for marine ecosystems. Firstly, it disrupts the food chain by reducing the number of species at lower levels. Many fish, for example, rely on the algae that live in symbiosis with corals as their primary source of food.
