This essay will argue that schools should indeed have mandatory physical education (PE) requirements to ensure students develop healthy habits from a young age, which can contribute significantly to their overall well-being and academic performance.
On one hand, it is essential to recognize the benefits of incorporating PE into the school curriculum. Firstly, regular exercise has been proven to improve both physical and mental health. Physically active children are less likely to become overweight or obese, which in turn reduces their risk of developing chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer later in life (World Health Organization, 2019). Additionally, exercise has been linked to improved cognitive function and academic achievement. Studies have shown that students who engage in regular physical activity tend to perform better on standardized tests and are more likely to graduate high school than their less active peers (CDC, 2018).
Moreover, making PE a compulsory part of the curriculum can also help to foster a sense of discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship among students.
