IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: Should governments ban single-use plastics?

Model Answer:

In recent years, the issue of plastic pollution has become increasingly significant, particularly with regard to the impact of single-use plastics on the environment. As a result, many people argue that governments should implement a complete ban on these products. While this may seem like an effective solution, it is important to consider both the potential benefits and drawbacks of such a policy.

On one hand, banning single-use plastics would undoubtedly have a positive impact on the environment. Plastic waste is a major contributor to pollution in our oceans, and it has been estimated that by 2050, there could be more plastic in the sea than fish. A ban on these products would help to reduce this level of pollution and protect marine life. Furthermore, a reduction in single-use plastics would also have a positive effect on landfill space, as these items are among the most common types of waste found in disposal sites.

On the other hand, implementing a ban on single-use plastics could have unintended consequences. For example, while it may encourage the use of more sustainable alternatives such as biodegradable products, it could also lead to an increase in the consumption of other non-recyclable materials. This would ultimately exacerbate the problem rather than alleviate it. Additionally, small and medium-sized businesses, which rely heavily on single-use plastics for packaging purposes, may face financial difficulties as a result of such a ban, potentially leading to job losses and a negative impact on the economy.

In conclusion, while there are clear environmental benefits to banning single-use plastics, it is important to carefully weigh these against potential economic consequences. Rather than implementing an outright ban, governments should focus on promoting sustainable alternatives and raising public awareness of the environmental impacts of plastic waste.
