Writing Task 2 Topic:Overfishing is considered as the greatest threat to marine ecosystems. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Model Answer:
In recent years, overfishing has become a significant concern for marine ecosystems worldwide. While it is true that overfishing poses a severe threat to these ecosystems, it is important to recognize that other factors such as habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change also contribute significantly to the degradation of marine environments.
In support of this argument, one can point out that overfishing has led to the decline in fish populations, which in turn affects the balance of the food chain. As predators are removed from their habitats, herbivorous species experience an increase in their population numbers and may cause overgrowth of algae and seagrass, thereby reducing biodiversity. Additionally, overfishing has caused a decline in the number of top predator species such as sharks and tuna, which are essential for maintaining the health and stability of marine ecosystems.
However, it is crucial to consider that other factors contribute to the decline of marine ecosystems. For instance, habitat destruction due to coastal development, pollution from human activities, and climate change have all played a significant role in the degradation of these environments. The loss of coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds due to human activity has significantly impacted marine life by reducing breeding grounds, nurseries, and feeding areas for various species. Furthermore, pollution from plastics, chemicals, and agricultural runoff has caused the death of countless marine organisms and disrupted food chains within these ecosystems.
In conclusion, while overfishing is undoubtedly a significant threat to marine ecosystems, it is important not to overlook the contributions of other human activities that pose equally severe challenges to the health and stability of our oceans. Consequently, a comprehensive approach that addresses all aspects of environmental conservation is necessary to ensure the long-term survival of marine life and ecosystems.
