This essay will explore the role of green technology in mitigating carbon emissions and discuss some of the hurdles that need to be overcome if this potential is to be realised.

On one hand, green technologies present a promising opportunity for reducing carbon emissions on an unprecedented scale. Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power can all reduce reliance on fossil fuels, which are major contributors to carbon emissions. Additionally, advancements in electric vehicles (EVs) mean that transport, another significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, can be powered by clean electricity rather than petrol or diesel. Furthermore, improvements in energy efficiency through smart buildings and appliances can reduce the overall demand for energy, thereby reducing emissions from power plants.

However, there are also notable challenges to the widespread adoption of green technologies. One such challenge is the high upfront costs associated with implementing these new systems. For instance, EVs typically cost more than their internal combustion engine counterparts, which can be a significant barrier for consumers. Governments and businesses need to invest in infrastructure such as charging stations and grid updates to support the growth of renewable energy sources, further adding to the financial burden.

Rare earth metals, for example, are essential components in many green technologies like electric car batteries, yet their extraction can have a significant environmental impact.
