One major concern is the excessive use of natural resources for raw materials, such as cotton, which is a water-intensive crop requiring large amounts of pesticides and fertilizers. Additionally, synthetic fibers, like polyester, are derived from nonrenewable fossil fuels and contribute to microplastic pollution in the world's oceans. The high levels of water usage and pollution generated in the manufacturing process also pose significant environmental threats.

Furthermore, the fashion industry's fast-paced nature has led to a culture of overconsumption, where consumers are encouraged to purchase new clothes frequently. This "fast fashion" model is characterized by low prices, quick turnaround times, and limited product lifespans. Consequently, garments are often disposed of after a single use, contributing to the growing problem of textile waste in landfills.

Social issues within the industry include exploitative labor practices, such as low wages, hazardous working conditions, and child labor. These practices can be found in various stages of production, from harvesting raw materials to manufacturing and distribution.
