Task 2 Topic: Is technology exacerbating or alleviating environmental problems?

Model Answer:

Technology has been both a blessing and a curse for the environment. While it has undoubtedly contributed to the creation of solutions that help mitigate some of our most pressing environmental issues, it also plays a significant role in exacerbating others. In this essay, I will examine the two-sided impact of technology on the environment: its alleviatory and exacerbatory effects.

On one hand, technological advancements have played a crucial role in mitigating environmental problems. Renewable energy sources like solar power, wind energy, and hydroelectric power provide cleaner alternatives to fossil fuels, reducing greenhouse gas emissions significantly. Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming more popular due to their lower carbon footprint compared to traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Furthermore, advancements in recycling technology have allowed us to reuse and recycle materials more efficiently, which reduces waste and conserves resources.

On the other hand, however, technology has also contributed to the worsening of environmental issues. The rapid expansion of the digital industry has led to an increase in electronic waste (e-waste), as outdated devices are discarded at alarming rates. Additionally, the production and distribution of energy-intensive technologies such as smartphones, computers, and electric vehicles have led to increased demand for non-renewable resources like metals and minerals, causing habitat destruction and pollution in the process. Lastly, technological innovations in agriculture, while improving crop yields, have contributed to an over-reliance on pesticides and fertilizers, which can harm ecosystems and biodiversity.

In conclusion, technology has had a dual impact on the environment: it has both alleviated and exacerbated environmental problems. While technological innovations have led to sustainable solutions in areas such as energy production and recycling, they have also contributed to increased resource consumption and pollution. Ultimately, whether technology is a net benefit or detriment to the environment depends on how we harness its potential and balance it with sustainable practices.
