Task 2 Writing Topic: The importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from livestock

Question: Some argue that it is more important to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from human activities, such as industry and transportation, than from livestock farming. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Model Answer:

Livestock farming has emerged as a significant contributor to the global increase in greenhouse gas emissions. While it is true that other human activities, including industry and transportation, also play a substantial role in exacerbating climate change, I believe that it is essential to prioritize reducing greenhouse gas emissions from livestock farming alongside these sectors.

Firstly, livestock farming contributes significantly to methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. Methane, in particular, has a global warming potential 28 times greater than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period. As the world's population continues to grow and diets become more meat-heavy, particularly in developing countries, the demand for livestock products is increasing rapidly, which will inevitably lead to higher emissions.

Secondly, it is essential to recognize the interdependence between human activities and livestock farming. For example, deforestation in the Amazon rainforest to create pastureland for cattle not only leads to a loss of biodiversity but also releases vast amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Similarly, the use of fossil fuels in industrial agriculture, such as fertilizer production and transportation, indirectly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. By addressing greenhouse gas emissions from livestock farming, we can also reduce those from other sectors that are closely connected to it.

Moreover, reducing greenhouse gas emissions from livestock farming is a more accessible and cost-effective solution for many developing countries compared to the transition to renewable energy sources in industries and transportation. For example, promoting sustainable grazing practices, improving feed efficiency, and adopting alternative livestock management systems can all contribute to emission reduction without significant financial investment.

In conclusion, while it is true that other human activities such as industry and transportation are substantial contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, it is crucial not to underestimate the importance of reducing emissions from livestock farming. By prioritizing this sector alongside others, we can make significant strides in mitigating the impacts of climate change on a global scale.
