IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic:"Should governments provide affordable housing for all citizens?"
Model Answer:
In recent years, the issue of affordable housing has become increasingly pressing around the world, with rising property prices and a growing number of people finding themselves unable to secure appropriate accommodation. Governments have a crucial role to play in ensuring that all citizens have access to affordable housing in order to maintain social cohesion and economic stability. While there are those who argue that the responsibility for providing housing should lie solely with individuals, it is important to consider the various advantages of government intervention.
One key argument in favour of government involvement is the creation of a more equitable society. By providing affordable housing, governments can help to close the wealth gap between different segments of the population. This would lead to a reduction in social inequality and contribute to the overall well-being of society. Furthermore, the provision of affordable housing can also have a positive impact on public health, as those who are forced to live in overcrowded or substandard conditions due to a lack of affordable options may experience increased stress levels and a higher likelihood of illness.
Another advantage of government intervention is the stimulation of economic growth. By investing in affordable housing projects, governments can create jobs and boost local economies. This in turn leads to an increase in tax revenues and a reduction in welfare costs, as those who are able to secure affordable accommodation are less likely to fall into poverty or require state support. Moreover, the availability of affordable housing can attract skilled workers to the area, which in turn can lead to a more diverse and vibrant local economy.
However, it is important to acknowledge that there are also potential drawbacks to government intervention in the provision of affordable housing. For example, some argue that it may discourage private investment in the housing sector, ultimately reducing the supply of available homes. Additionally, there are concerns that subsidised housing could lead to social segregation and a lack of community cohesion.
In conclusion, while there are certainly potential downsides to government intervention in the provision of affordable housing, the overall benefits outweigh these risks. By ensuring that all citizens have access to appropriate accommodation, governments can promote a more equitable society, stimulate economic growth and improve public health. It is therefore essential that steps are taken to provide affordable housing for all citizens, in order to maintain social cohesion and ensure the well-being of future generations.
