IELTS Writing Task 2 question on the importance of transitioning to a circular economy:

"Some people argue that moving towards a circular economy is essential for sustainable development, while others believe that it is not feasible in today's world. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion."

Here's a model answer for this question:

In recent years, there has been growing concern about the environmental impact of traditional economic systems. As a result, many experts are advocating a shift towards a circular economy as a means to promote sustainable development. In this essay, I will discuss both views on the feasibility of such a transition and express my own opinion on the matter.

Those in favor of the circular economy argue that it is essential for sustainable development due to several reasons. Firstly, a circular economy promotes resource efficiency, as it seeks to minimize waste and maximize the reuse and recycling of materials. This not only reduces the need for virgin resources but also lowers the environmental impact associated with extraction, production, and disposal. Secondly, a transition to a circular economy can stimulate economic growth by creating new industries, such as recycling and remanufacturing, which in turn generate employment opportunities. Lastly, a circular economy aligns well with the principles of sustainability, as it aims to balance economic, social, and environmental objectives.

On the other hand, opponents of the circular economy argue that it is not feasible due to several obstacles. One major challenge is the current global economic system, which relies heavily on the linear model of "take-make-waste." Breaking away from this established framework requires significant structural changes and investments in new technologies, infrastructure, and processes. Moreover, the transition may face resistance from industries that benefit from the traditional linear economy, such as those involved in the production and sale of disposable goods.

In my opinion, while there are challenges associated with transitioning to a circular economy, it is crucial for sustainable development. By shifting away from the linear model and adopting a more resource-efficient approach, we can minimize environmental degradation and ensure long-term economic growth. However, to overcome the barriers and facilitate a smooth transition, concerted efforts must be made by governments, businesses, and individuals alike. Collaborative efforts in research, development, and policy-making will be necessary to address the challenges and reap the benefits of a circular economy.

In terms of IELTS scoring standards, this model answer demonstrates a strong command of language (band 7+), coherence and cohesion (band 7+), and a clear expression of ideas and opinion (band 7+).
