In this essay, I will analyze both perspectives and provide evidence to support my viewpoint.

On one hand, it can be argued that society has become more empathetic due to increased global interaction. The world has become more interconnected than ever before, with the internet and social media allowing people from different cultures to communicate and share their experiences. This exchange of ideas and perspectives has helped individuals to understand and appreciate the struggles and triumphs of others, thereby fostering empathy. For example, the rise of humanitarian aid organizations and global non-profit initiatives has demonstrated a strong sense of compassion and concern for those in need.

On the other hand, there are also valid reasons to believe that society is becoming less empathetic. The rapid advancement of technology has led to a decline in face-to-face interactions, which can result in a loss of emotional connection with others. Additionally, social media platforms have been criticized for promoting superficial relationships and fostering a culture of narcissism, where people prioritize their own image over the wellbeing of others. Furthermore, the rise of nationalism and political polarization has led to an increase in prejudice and discrimination, which can hinder empathy towards those from different backgrounds or beliefs.

In conclusion, while it is clear that both factors have contributed to a change in societal empathy levels, it is difficult to definitively say whether society is becoming more or less empathetic overall.
