IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: The role of international agreements in combating climate change
Model Answer:
International agreements play a crucial role in combating climate change, as they provide a framework for collaboration and cohesion among nations to address the pressing global issue. These agreements, which are often based on scientific research and expert consensus, set out common objectives, guidelines, and targets that can help minimize greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable development.
One of the most significant international agreements in this regard is the Paris Agreement, which was adopted in 2015 and has been signed by 197 countries. This agreement aims to limit global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, with an aspiration to keep the increase below 1.5 degrees Celsius. It also emphasizes the importance of developed countries providing financial assistance and capacity-building support to developing nations in their efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
In addition to the Paris Agreement, other important international agreements include the Kyoto Protocol (1997) and the Montreal Protocol (1987). The Kyoto Protocol established legally binding targets for industrialized countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while the Montreal Protocol, which focused on protecting the ozone layer, has had a significant impact on reducing emissions of ozone-depleting substances.
The effectiveness of these agreements is demonstrated by the steady decline in the rate of increase in global CO2 emissions since 2014, as well as the increasing number of countries and regions that have committed to ambitious climate targets. However, despite the progress made so far, much more needs to be done to fully address the threat posed by climate change.
In conclusion, international agreements are essential in combating climate change as they establish a global framework for action, promote collaboration between nations, and set out common goals and targets. While significant progress has been made through these agreements, it is important that countries continue to work together and strengthen their commitments to ensure a sustainable future for all.
