IELTS.WORK Free Online Writing Practice # 1711274389
Writing Task 2 Topic: "Is nuclear energy a viable solution to climate change?"
Model Answer:
Nuclear energy, although often considered as an alternative source of power, is not a viable long-term solution to combat climate change due to several factors such as its environmental impact, high costs and safety concerns. While it's true that nuclear power does not emit greenhouse gases directly during operation, the entire life cycle of nuclear energy production - from uranium mining to waste disposal - has a significant carbon footprint. The production, transport, and eventual storage of spent fuel rods also contribute to the overall environmental impact.
Furthermore, the high capital investment required for building nuclear power plants can be prohibitive in developing countries where funds are scarce. Additionally, accidents like Chernobyl and Fukushima have raised concerns about the safety of nuclear facilities. These incidents demonstrate that the potential consequences of relying on nuclear energy can be catastrophic.
In conclusion, although nuclear energy may appear as a temporary solution to climate change due to its low direct emission rate, it is not sustainable in the long run. The environmental impact, high costs and safety issues associated with nuclear power make it an impractical and risky choice compared to renewable sources like solar or wind power.
