On one hand, banning single-use plastics could lead to significant environmental benefits. For instance, it has been estimated that around 8 million tons of plastic waste enter our oceans each year, causing harm to marine life and ecosystems. By eliminating single-use plastics such as bags, straws, and cutlery, governments can reduce the amount of plastic waste generated and decrease the strain on landfills and natural resources. Moreover, the transition to reusable or biodegradable alternatives could encourage a shift towards more sustainable consumption habits and stimulate innovation in the development of eco-friendly products.

On the other hand, there are arguments against banning single-use plastics. One major concern is that such a ban may disproportionately affect lower-income communities and developing nations. For many people in these areas, single-use plastics serve as essential tools for everyday tasks, such as food storage or water transportation. Banning these items without providing adequate alternatives could exacerbate existing inequalities and create additional hardships for vulnerable populations.
