Firstly, it is essential to recognize that technological advancements have undoubtedly increased access to ICTs for many people worldwide. For instance, the widespread availability of smartphones has enabled more individuals, especially in developing countries, to connect to the internet and engage with digital platforms. As a result, these technologies have helped narrow the digital divide by offering affordable alternatives to traditional computing devices such as desktop computers or laptops. Furthermore, governments and non-profit organizations have been investing in digital infrastructure projects, ensuring that even remote communities gain access to reliable internet connections.

On the other hand, technology can also exacerbate the digital divide in several ways. The high cost of advanced ICTs, such as virtual reality headsets or high-end gaming consoles, is a significant barrier for many low-income households. Additionally, the digital literacy gap persists as not everyone has the necessary skills to fully utilize these technologies effectively. In some cases, people from disadvantaged backgrounds may not have access to proper education or training programs that equip them with the required knowledge and expertise.

Moreover, the commercialization of technology can also widen the digital divide. As companies continue to develop innovative products and services, a growing number of people find themselves unable to afford these new technologies due to their high prices. Consequently, this creates an imbalance where wealthier individuals enjoy the benefits of cutting-edge gadgets and applications, while those with fewer resources are left behind.

In conclusion, technology has simultaneously widened and closed the digital divide by providing more people with access to ICTs and improving connectivity. However, it is equally important to acknowledge that disparities still exist in terms of affordability, digital literacy, and commercialization. To bridge this gap, governments, businesses, and educational institutions must work together to ensure equal opportunities for all individuals, regardless of their socio-economic status.
