Writing Task 2 Topic: Overfishing - The Greatest Threat to Marine Ecosystems

Question: "Overfishing is considered to be the greatest threat to marine ecosystems." To what extent do you agree with this statement?

Model Answer:

In recent years, overfishing has become a significant concern for marine ecosystems around the world. This essay will discuss whether or not overfishing is indeed the primary threat to these ecosystems and analyze the various factors that contribute to their decline. Although overfishing does pose a serious risk to marine life, other human activities such as pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change also play a crucial role in the degradation of marine ecosystems.

Overfishing occurs when the rate at which fish are removed from the ocean is faster than the rate at which they can reproduce. This results in an imbalance within the ecosystem, leading to a decline in species diversity and abundance. Additionally, the practice of using destructive fishing techniques, such as bottom trawling, causes significant damage to the seafloor habitats of various marine organisms.

However, other factors also contribute to the decline of marine ecosystems. For instance, pollution from agricultural runoff, industrial waste, and plastic debris in the ocean poses a considerable threat to marine life. Chemicals in these pollutants can accumulate in the tissues of fish, leading to toxic effects on both marine species and human consumers. Moreover, habitat destruction due to coastal development and climate change-induced sea level rise has resulted in the loss of critical breeding grounds for many marine species.

In conclusion, while overfishing undoubtedly poses a considerable threat to marine ecosystems, it is important not to overlook other human activities that also contribute significantly to their decline. Therefore, addressing these multiple factors is essential for the conservation and restoration of our world's oceans.
