Writing Task 2 Topic: The importance of protecting coral reefs from bleaching

Question: Some people argue that coral reef conservation should not be a priority due to the numerous other environmental issues facing the world today, while others believe that it is crucial to protect these ecosystems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion on whether or not protecting coral reefs from bleaching should be a top priority for governments and societies worldwide.

Model Answer:

Coral reefs are often referred to as the "rainforests of the sea" due to their immense biodiversity and ecological importance. However, they face an increasing threat from climate change-induced coral bleaching, which has sparked a debate over whether the conservation of these ecosystems should be considered a top priority for governments and societies worldwide.

On one hand, there are those who argue that coral reef conservation should not be a priority due to the numerous other environmental issues facing the world today. For instance, deforestation, plastic pollution, and habitat loss are all pressing concerns that require immediate attention. It can be argued that by focusing on these broader issues, we can create a more sustainable future for both humans and the planet as a whole. Moreover, some critics contend that investing resources in coral reef conservation could divert funding from other essential areas such as healthcare, education, and poverty alleviation.

On the other hand, there are those who believe that protecting coral reefs should indeed be a top priority. Coral reefs provide a vital ecosystem service by supporting marine biodiversity and providing food, income, and protection from coastal erosion for millions of people worldwide. Furthermore, they serve as critical nursery grounds for many fish species, which in turn support local fishing industries. Losing these ecosystems could have devastating consequences for both marine life and the human populations that rely on them.

In my opinion, while it is true that other environmental issues must be addressed, we cannot afford to ignore the plight of coral reefs. They are an essential component of our planet's biodiversity, and their loss would have far-reaching consequences for ecosystems and human societies alike. Therefore, governments and societies worldwide should prioritize efforts to protect coral reefs from bleaching and invest in sustainable solutions that can preserve these vital ecosystems for future generations.
