In this essay, I will analyze both perspectives and provide evidence to support my conclusion.

One argument in favor of increased tolerance is the rise of social media platforms, which have given individuals a powerful tool to express their opinions openly. For instance, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram enable users to share their thoughts with a wide audience, fostering dialogue and understanding between people from different walks of life. This exposure to alternative viewpoints has led many to become more open-minded and accepting of dissenting opinions.

On the other hand, critics argue that society is actually growing less tolerant due to the polarization of political views and the rise of 'echo chambers.' Echo chambers are online environments where users only interact with like-minded individuals, reinforcing their beliefs while excluding opposing viewpoints. As a result, people become more entrenched in their own perspectives, leading to increased intolerance towards dissenting opinions.

Moreover, the rise of identity politics has exacerbated this issue. Identity politics is characterized by the prioritization of one's ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation over broader social issues. This approach can inadvertently create divisions within society and make it difficult for individuals to engage in meaningful conversations across different viewpoints.

In conclusion, while there are arguments supporting both the increase and decrease in tolerance towards dissenting opinions, it is essential to recognize that each perspective offers a valid point of view. It is important to continue fostering dialogue between different groups and promoting understanding in order to create a more tolerant society.
