On one hand, proponents of the irreversibility theory argue that the chemical changes taking place within the ocean are permanent. As carbon dioxide dissolves in seawater, it forms carbonic acid, which increases the acidity of the water. This process alters the delicate balance of marine ecosystems and threatens the survival of numerous species. Additionally, calcium carbonate, a key component for shell-building organisms like mollusks and corals, becomes less soluble in more acidic conditions.
