Greenhouse gas emissions from livestock are a critical factor contributing to climate change, and it is essential that we reduce these emissions to mitigate the negative impact on our environment. There are several key reasons why this issue should be addressed with urgency.

Firstly, livestock farming is one of the leading sources of greenhouse gases, particularly methane and nitrous oxide, which have a significant warming effect on the atmosphere. According to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the livestock sector accounts for approximately 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with the majority arising from enteric fermentation in ruminant animals such as cows and sheep.

Secondly, deforestation to create grazing land and cropland for livestock feed exacerbates this issue, as trees act as carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. As a result of deforestation, not only is the earth's natural capacity to absorb carbon reduced, but it also leads to a loss in biodiversity and disrupts ecosystem balance.

Lastly, reducing greenhouse gas emissions from livestock farming has the potential to provide numerous co-benefits. For instance, it can help improve air quality by reducing ammonia emissions which contribute to acid rain, and it may also decrease pressure on freshwater resources due to less water consumption in feed production.
