In this essay, I will discuss both perspectives and provide my own evaluation.

One of the main arguments in favor of increased tolerance is the role of social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Reddit. These tools allow users from all walks of life to voice their opinions and engage in debates with others. As a result, society has become more aware of different perspectives and is more willing to listen to dissenting opinions. This can be seen in the rise of grassroots movements, which are often built on the foundation of diverse viewpoints. Moreover, educational institutions have also played their part by incorporating critical thinking and tolerance into their curriculums, fostering a generation that is better equipped to deal with differing ideas.

However, it cannot be ignored that political polarization has led to an erosion of tolerance in some cases. As people become more entrenched in their beliefs, they are less likely to listen to or even tolerate dissenting opinions. This phenomenon can be observed in the rise of echo chambers, where individuals only interact with like-minded people and consume news that aligns with their existing views. Additionally, the spread of fake news and misinformation has further exacerbated this issue, as it creates a divide between those who accept certain facts and those who do not.

In my opinion, while there have been improvements in terms of societal tolerance, it is essential to recognize that progress has been hindered by political polarization and the proliferation of echo chambers. Therefore, it is crucial for society to promote open dialogue, critical thinking, and respect for differing opinions in order to foster a truly tolerant environment.

In terms of IELTS scoring standards, this response would likely receive a Band Score 8 or 9 due to its comprehensive discussion of the topic, clear argumentation, and the use of relevant examples.
