Firstly, single-use plastics contribute significantly to environmental pollution. They are non-biodegradable and take hundreds of years to decompose. Consequently, they end up in landfills or as litter, causing harm to wildlife, marine life, and ecosystems. For instance, sea turtles often mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, leading to their ingestion and eventual death. Moreover, plastic particles can enter the food chain when consumed by small organisms, which are then eaten by larger creatures, causing a range of health issues.

Secondly, the production of single-use plastics requires substantial amounts of nonrenewable resources such as oil and gas. The extraction, refining, and transportation of these raw materials contribute to air and water pollution, as well as greenhouse gas emissions.
